FIVB: Day 2 in Fuzhou

The slow start continues for Canada at the Fuzhou Open.

Kacie MacTavish (Sharon, On) and Caleigh Whitaker (Sharon, On) were the No. 2 ranked team heading into the Qualifier, and opened with a straight-sets win over Japan, 21-19, 21-12. Unfortunately, they did not qualify for the Main Draw, dropping to Azerbaijan 13-21, 21-19, 13-15.

Josh Binstock (Richmond Hill, On) and Sam Schachter (Richmond Hill, On) are the sole men's team in the Main Draw, ranked fourth heading to the event. As Josh Binstock said on his Instagram post, their working through a few things in the first matches of the season. They went 1-1, dropping to Barsouk/Kosharev of Russia (17-21, 18-21) but rebounding nicely to top Winter/Petutschnig of Austria 21-16, 21-15.

Next up, they have Böckermann/Flüggen of Germany who are currently 2-0. You can catch that one on Court Two at 1:00 a.m. EDT/ 10:00 p.m. PDT.

They won't be the only ones you can watch tomorrow. The women's Main Draw kicks-off tomorrow, and three teams are ready to get the season going. At 8:00 a.m. EDT, Jamie Broder (Victoria, BC) and Kristina Valjas (Toronto, On) against Radarong/Udomchavee of Thailand on Court 1.

Next up are Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, On) and Heather Bansley (Waterdown, On) on court 2. They'll be up against Mersmann/Schneider of Germany at 10:30 a.m. EDT.

Also in the Main Draw are Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, On) and Taylor Pischke (Winnipeg, Mb). They're in a pool along side Italy, Argentina and Austria, and unfortunately are not yet scheduled to be featured on either streamed court.
