Three Stars of the Week - November 16th-22nd

Three Stars of the Week - November 16th-22nd

Every week we'll be highlighting the top three performances from Canadians playing professionally around the world! Here's your Three Stars for the week of November 16th-22nd.

1st Star - Tabi Love - SC Schweriner

In her first start of the season, Tabi Love (Dauphin, MB) went 11-for-20 and had 13 points in Schweriner's 3-0 win over Thuringia on Saturday. Adding Tabi on the outside is a huge addition to a team that is already leading the Bundesliga. Can someone say early season favourites?

2nd Star - Toon van Lankvelt - Jastrzebski Wegiel

Looks like Toon van Lankvelt (Rivers, MB) is settling in nicely in Poland! Jastrzebski Wegiel was on the other side of a five-setter this weekend, falling to Gdansk in the extra frame, but the veteran outside hitter dropped 17 points in the process.

3rd Star - Bryan Fraser - United Volleys

Usually scoring 10 points in a losing effort isn't worth mentioning. But when you come off the bench to lead your team in scoring in only a set and a half of work? That deserves a mention. Bryan Fraser (Saskatoon, SK) is slowly adjusting to life in the Bundesliga, but it didn't take him long to adjust this weekend as he was the lone light for the United Volleys this weekend.

Dresdner SC vs. Allianz MTV Stuttgart - 12:30 p.m. ET/ 9:30 a.m. PT

A rematch of last year's Bundesliga final, Dresdner (2-1) is in unfamiliar territory after falling to Schweriner last weekend and then to Fenerbahce in the Champions League. While Caroline Jarmoc (Calgary, AB) is questionable to suit up for Stuttgart (2-1) as she waits for papers

SVG L眉neburg vs. TV Rottenburg - 2:30 p.m. ET/ 11:30 a.m. PT

L眉neburg (1-1) is riding high after a big win over D眉ren earlier in the week, and these three Canadians have a lot to do with that. They'll need to be at their best again today when they take on Rottenburg (1-1).

Ajaccio vs. Nancy - 2:00 p.m. ET/ 11:00 a.m. PT

Now in his third season, Brett Dailey (Ottawa, ON) is one of the leaders at GFC Ajaccio (2-1). They look to help to help them past Nancy (1-2) today.

Nantes vs. SF Paris St-Cloud - 3:30 p.m. ET/ 12:30 p.m. PT

Coming off two-straight wins, Shanice Marcelle (Victoria, BC) and Nantes (1-1) have Paris St-Cloud (2-0) up next. Nantes will continue to lean heavily on the Canadian outside as she dropped a team-high 19 points in their last LNV match.

Nantes Rez茅 vs. Lyon - 3:00 p.m. ET/ Noon PT

Max Burt (Gander, NL) and Nantes barely avoided relegation last season, but already have a win under their belts this year. They look to make it two straight against Lyon today.

Paris vs. Montpellier - 3:30 p.m. ET/ 12:30 PT

After suffering the first loss of the season to Chaumont earlier in the week, Nick Hoag (Sherbrooke, QC) and Paris will be looking to bounce back today against Montpellier, who are riding high after upsetting Lyon in their last match.

LNV: Tours, Hoag Repeat As Champions

LNV: Tours, Hoag Repeat As Champions

For the fourth year running, Tours VB are the champions of France  after once again defeating Paris 3-2 (19-25, 33-35, 25-15, 31-29, 15-6) in dramatic comeback fashion  in the LNV Finals.

It's now safe to call them a dynasty. This is Tours' sixth French Championship and their fifth in six years, and will be adding this trophy to the French Cup they won earlier this year.

For a while though, it looked like it was going to be third-timers charm for Paris. After clinching the second set by the incredible score of 35-33 to go up 2-0, you would think Tours was ready to bow out.

Nick Hoag clinches his second-straight LNV Championship with Tours! Repost from @nickhoag7

A video posted by Volleyball Source (@volleyballsource) on

But you don't tie the league record for most consecutive championships by giving up. The infusion of Nick Hoag (Sherbrooke, Qb) brought new life to Tours, and they were ready to fight. Hoag came in off the bench and was absolute dynamite, scoring 20 points ( 16 kills, three aces and a block) in a little over three sets of play. On top of it all, he even scored the winning point.

Spending the majority of the second-half of the season on the bench, this was not the season expected the 22-year old to have given his performance with Team Canada in 2014. Regardless of his past troubles, he was able to step up at the most crucial of moments and lead his team to victory, something needed in the Canadian ranks.

With the win, Tours once again secures a spot in the 2016 CEV Champions League. Next up, they attempt to go for a fifth-straight, a feat that has never been accomplished in the LNV. Paris (2000-2003, 2006-2009) is the only French team to win four in-a-row, a record Tours could break in 2016.

That wraps up Volleyball Source's coverage of the French LNV. Tune in once again next year as we bring you all the news and results from Europe's top leagues!

LNV: Playoff Picture Set in France

LNV: Playoff Picture Set in France

Saturday was the final day of regular season action in France's LNV, and multiple Canadians were playing for their future. Here's what went down and how the playoff picture finished.

Ajaccio 3 - S猫te 0

GFC Ajaccio decided to take their destiny into their own hands with a huge 3-0 win over S猫te to be the last team to confirm their spot in the playoffs. With Rudy Verhoeff (Calgary, Ab) coming up big with nine points (5 kills, 4 blocks), they also pushed all the way to sixth.

Toon van Lankvelt was huge for Lyon this year, finishing second in points with 359 (285 kills, 55 blocks, 18 aces) points this season.  Photo: ASUL Lyon

Lyon 3 - Toulouse 1

A nice little three-game winning streak for Lyon capped off by a 3-1 win over Toulouse on Saturday secures them the third seed heading into the playoffs. Adam SImac (Ottawa, On) came up big with 13 points (5 kills, 6 blocks, 2 aces) while Toon van Lankvelt (Rivers, Mb) added 12 (11 kills, 1 ace). Simac's block total on the season ends at 75, good for 5th in the LNV.

Playoff preview

On the cusp of relegation only a year ago, ASUL Lyon has made some incredible improvements this past year, grabbing the sixth-seed. In two meetings this season, they have yet to drop a set to the team from the island of Corsica. On the flip side, Ajaccio is known for one of the most loyal fan-bases in France, and an away game on the island might not be such paradise.

Next Match: Friday April 10th - 2:00 p.m. EDT/ 11:00 a.m. PDT

Tours 3 - Beauvais 1

Make it nine in a row for Tours VB heading into the playoffs to defend their LNV Championship. Nick Hoag's (Sherbrooke, Qc) haven't lost a match since February 5th, and were able to push all the way to fourth after a slow start to the season.

Playoff Preview

While Tours finished six points ahead of the fifth-placed S猫te, we're clearly in for a tight match-up. S猫te took home both matches against the defending champs this year with 3-0 and 3-2 wins. With a spot in the semi's on the line and a lot to prove on both sides, this could be the most exciting match-up o the quarterfinals.

Next Match: Friday April 10th - 2:00 p.m. EDT/ 11:00 a.m. PDT

B茅ziers 2 vs. Hainaut 3

In a match that meant very little to them a a whole bunch to their opponent, the Angels fall 3-2 to Hainaut in the final game of the regular season. Rebecca Pavan (Kitchener, On) led all blockers with six stuffs and added three kills in a loss that allowed Hainaut to avoid relegation.

Playoff Preview

A rematch of last year's semi-final, B茅ziers will be looking to avenge a series lost that went the limit and saw Nantes move on to the final. For B茅ziers, they'll have to continue doing what they did this year - winning both matches against last year's LNV runners-up by 3-2 and 3-1 scores.

Next Match: Friday April 10th - 2:00 p.m. EDT/ 11:00 a.m. PDT

Burt, Nantes Avoid Relegation with Win over Paris

Sometimes, it's just about who wants it more. Despite a 32 point difference between the two teams, Nantes clinched a spot in the "Ligue A" for next season with a 3-1 win over Paris. Max Burt (Gander, NL) hit a perfect 100% on two attempts, seeing action in three of four sets. While they didn't make playoffs, the feeling of narrowly missing relegation must be relieving.

Tourcoing 1 - St-Nazaire 3

The final game of the season and the final match in France's top division went pretty much the same way as the rest of their season. Obviously Dan Jansen van Doorn (Langley, BC) didn't get the memo though, as he dominated with six blocks and added five kills.

LNV - France

Nantes Rez茅 vs. Toulouse

2:00 p.m. EST/ 11:00 a.m. PST

It's the biggest match of the year for Max Burt (Gander, NL) and Nantes as they have a chance to stay in France's top division today. With Narbonne's loss to Paris yesterday, both teams sit with 20 points on the edge of relegation, in the second-last weekend of the regular season. With a match-up against league-leading Paris in the final week, Nantes needs to get all every point available to remain with the best.

Canadians in Action: February 20th

Canadians in Action: February 20th

A quiet Friday for volleyball over in Europe, but there are a few Canadians in action, here's what's on tap for today!

ASUL Lyon vs. Chaumont

2:00 p.m. EST/ 11:00 a.m. PST

With the regular season winding down, Toon van Lankvelt (Rivers, MA), Adam Simac (Ottawa, ON) and company must be feeling pretty good about their spot in third place. Nothing is safe however in the tight LNV standings. Even though Chaumont sits all the way in eighth, they are a mere 10 points behind Lyon, not a huge margin when a win gives your three.

SWD power volleys D眉ren vs. VCO Berlin

1:00 p.m. EST/ 10:00 a.m. PST

The powervolleys are rolling! Blair Bann (Edmonton, AB), Ciaran McGovern (Grande Prairie, AB) and company have won six in-a-row and they look to make it seven today against the lowly VCO Berlin. Unfortunately it doesn't look like their will be a live stream for this one, but given Berlin's hasn't mustered a win yet, we don't think you'll be missing much.
