Brazil has always been a force on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, but this past season has been has seen a lot of Green and Gold on top of the podium.  This summer, Copacabana Beach plays home to the site of Beach Volleyball at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

We've created this page to help everyone understand the qualification process as well as identify which countries and teams have qualified for Rio.

Qualification Process

The 2016 Rio Olympics Beach Volleyball tournament is a 24 team tournament.  There is a maximum of two entries per country per gender.  Here is how those 24 spots are earned:

  • Host Country
  • Winner of World Championships
  • Top 15 on FIVB Olympic Rankings (as of June 13, 2016)
  • 5 Continental Cup Winners from each Continental Zone
  • 2 "Last Chance" Qualifier Teams

If at any stage along the way, a country already qualifies two teams per gender, they are not eligible for future qualifying events.  For example, Brazil is the host and won the world championships, therefore they are not allowed to qualify a 3rd team and any other Brazil teams are skipped over on the remaining qualifying events.

It's also important to note that the qualification spots are for a country, not for a specific team.  Each country's national federation will decide who goes to Rio for any spot qualified.  This is especially tricky with Continental Cup winner and "Last Chance" qualifying teams.
