Wilson volleyball range at a glance
Wilson groups its volleyball offering into four listed volleyball categories: indoor, outdoor, beach, and collaboration or special-edition products. The category page currently exposes 494 items in the main volleyball index, while the indoor volleyball category exposes 3,530 items. These are category-index counts, not a claim that every item is a distinct volleyball model or that the two counts are directly additive. Both figures are attributed to Shop Volleyballs | Wilson Sporting Goods and Shop Indoor Volleyballs | Wilson Sporting Goods.
Wilson says its volleyball research and innovation work has continued for over 20 years. It also says the brand has supported the AVP for more than 20 years. Those statements describe Wilson’s own historical positioning and should not be read as independently verified historical measurements. The claims appear in Wilson Innovation Keeps All Eyes on the Ball and Top Gifts for Volleyball Players | Wilson Sporting Goods.
The AVP line covers both official-game and recreational use. Wilson says its volleyballs are available in official game and replica variants across the AVP line. The product mix also includes an AVP Soft Play Volleyball described as the AVP’s official choice for beginners and casual play, plus the Cast Away Volleyball, which Wilson describes as a replica of the film’s iconic ball.
OPTX design and construction statistics
Wilson says the AVP OPTX beach volleyball was designed in 2016. Its design uses 18 panels, a microfiber composite leather cover, and a rubber bladder intended to increase rebound and air retention. Wilson also says it built the OPTX AVP with an eight-member advisory staff. These details come from Wilson Innovation Keeps All Eyes on the Ball.
The product listing gives the AVP OPTX several defined use and construction characteristics. It is rated for ages 13 and up, approved for official AVP play, and built for beach and grass surfaces. Its cover construction is sewn, its internal construction is described as standard, and its cover material is Micro-Fiber Composite Leather. Wilson markets it as the official volleyball of the AVP tour. The source is Wilson AVP OPTX Game Volleyball WTH00020XB.
Visual spin technology is a recurring OPTX feature. Wilson says the AVP OPTX uses VST, or visual spin technology. In a separate Wilson product article, the company says its patented VST uses color variance to maximize visibility. The technology therefore appears in both the game-ball description and the brand’s broader explanation of the ball’s visual design. See Wilson AVP OPTX Game Volleyball WTH00020XB and Top 12 Volleyball Gifts for Coaches | Wilson Sporting Goods.
Wilson’s OPTX Grass ball extends the same product family into grass play. Wilson says it became the official ball of the AVP Grass Volleyball Tour and followed the 2023 release of the GRX. The company says the ball carries over the hand-crafted construction of OPTX beach volleyball, uses abrasion-resistant microfiber composite leather, and has moisture protection for grass play.
The OPTX Grass also uses VST to improve spin detection. Wilson says its phosphorescent red design improves visibility on grass courts and that the ball is designed for dark environments as well as bright ones. According to Wilson, the design helps players keep their sights set on the ball in dark environments and represents a significant step up from the first edition grass ball. These claims are from Meet the New OPTX Grass Volleyball.
Replica, soft-play, and special-edition models
The OPTX AVP Tour Replica line is built in official size and uses VST visual spin technology and Optic Flow graphics. Wilson specifies an 18-panel machine-sewn build and a butyl rubber bladder. The company describes this line as intended for recreational beach games and says it offers consistent shape retention. These details are listed in WILSON OPTX AVP Tour Replica Volleyball Composite Leather VST Visual Spin Optic Flow Beach WTH01020X.
The AVP Soft Play Volleyball is another 18-panel machine-sewn model. Wilson says its butyl rubber bladder supports longer inflation retention, and that it is intended for indoor and outdoor play. The product is rated for ages 13 and up and is sold in at least two colorways, including white and blue. Wilson positions it as the AVP’s official choice for beginners and casual play. The source is Wilson AVP Soft Play Volleyball.
The Cast Away Volleyball has several measurable or explicitly stated characteristics in Wilson’s gift guide. Wilson says it uses a durable synthetic leather cover, is built to official size and weight, and has long-lasting air retention. Its construction is 18-panel machine-sewn. Wilson ties the model to a 20th-anniversary marker in December 2020 and says the same ball is sold inflated, deflated, or in a mini size. Those descriptions are from Top Gifts for Volleyball Players | Wilson Sporting Goods.
Wilson’s coach gift list contained 12 items. One of those products, the Beach Ball Cart, can hold 24 volleyballs. The same article identifies the AVP OPTX as the AVP’s official game ball and again describes VST as a color-variance system intended to maximize visibility. See Top 12 Volleyball Gifts for Coaches | Wilson Sporting Goods.
Official ball measurements and equipment systems
The FIVB Official Volleyball Rules 2021–2024 specify a ball circumference of 65–67 cm and a weight of 260–280 g. The prescribed ball pressure is 0.30–0.325 kg/cm², equivalent in the same rules to 4.26–4.61 psi or 294.3–318.82 mbar or hPa.
| FIVB ball specification | Official range |
|---|---|
| Circumference | 65–67 cm |
| Weight | 260–280 g |
| Pressure | 0.30–0.325 kg/cm² |
| Pressure, alternate unit | 4.26–4.61 psi |
| Pressure, alternate unit | 294.3–318.82 mbar or hPa |
The FIVB rules also require all balls in a match to share the same circumference, weight, pressure, type, and color standards. In FIVB and World or Official competitions, the ball retrieval system uses five balls. Six ball retrievers are placed around the court in that five-ball setup. These are competition-system requirements, separate from the construction details Wilson publishes for individual products.
AVP grass and beach court statistics
The AVP Grass Guidelines and Rules of Play list two court sizes. Short courts measure 16 m by 8 m, or 52 feet 6 inches by 26 feet 3 inches. Big courts measure 18 m by 9 m, or 59 feet by 29 feet 6 inches.
AVP Grass uses an 8-foot net for men’s doubles, co-ed, quads, and junior boys divisions under 16U and 18U. It uses a 7-foot-4-inch net for women’s doubles, junior boys 10U, 12U, and 14U, and all junior girls divisions. The same guidelines say Wilson is the official beach volleyball brand of the AVP Grass Tour.
The AVP Rulebook 2020 gives the standard beach court as 16 m by 8 m, with a minimum 4 m free zone and at least 7 m of overhead clearance. Court lines are 5–8 cm wide. The sand must be at least 40 cm deep, fine, and loosely compacted. Unlike indoor volleyball, AVP beach volleyball has no centerline.
| AVP court or equipment measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Beach court | 16 m × 8 m |
| Minimum free zone | 4 m |
| Minimum overhead clearance | 7 m |
| Line width | 5–8 cm |
| Minimum sand depth | 40 cm |
| Men’s net height | 2.43 m |
| Women’s net height | 2.24 m |
The older AVP Rulebook 2017 specifies a 2.43 m net for men’s beach volleyball and a 2.24 m net for women’s beach volleyball. It lists posts at 2.55 m high, positioned 0.7–1 m from the sideline padding. Post padding must reach 5 feet 6 inches in height and be at least one-half inch thick.
Beach volleyball rules and NCAA formats
AVP beach volleyball uses two players per team. Each team has three hits to return the ball, including the block touch. The game uses rally scoring, and serves alternate after each side-out under that scoring system. These rules are stated in the AVP Rulebook 2020.
The NCAA format is also two versus two rather than six versus six. According to NCAA.com beach volleyball rules, NCAA beach volleyball duals use 10 student-athletes divided into five pairs. Pair matches are best of three sets. Sets are first to 21 points, deciding sets are first to 15, and a two-point margin is required to win a set. Teams switch sides every seven points.
NCAA doubles courts measure 16 m by 8 m. NCAA beach volleyball was officially sanctioned for the 2016 season. Beach volleyball debuted as a demonstration sport at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and became an official Olympic sport at the 1996 Atlanta Games. NCAA beach volleyball competition can include up to three coaches per program.
Referee equipment has its own measurements. NCAA.com says referee stands had to be mandated by the 2020 season. The referee’s eye position should be about 19 inches above the top of the net, and front and side padding on the referee stand must reach at least 5 feet 6 inches. These details come from NCAA.com referee stands mandated beach volleyball.
For outdoor play, Wilson’s beach-volleyball guidance identifies sunglasses, hats, sand socks, and cold-weather gear as equipment players use outdoors. Those items address playing conditions, while the ball specifications, court dimensions, net heights, and scoring formats define the measurable framework around Wilson’s AVP products.
